Have you ever thought about choosing a different kind of vacation? Maybe one that includes helping out a local charity or taking a Volunteer focused vacation.

This past weekend Tom and I did just that. On Saturday we rolled up our sleeves and chose to help a local charity event to help raise money to support their organization.

North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation

Mission: To preserve and develop the North Idaho Centennial Trail System and promote non-motorized trail connectivity throughout North Idaho
The Foundation’s work is funded entirely through memberships donations and events such as Ales for the Trail, the Coeur d’Alene Marathon and Coeur d’Fondo. We would like to invite you, the trail enthusiast, to become a member and supporter of this beautiful asset to North Idaho community. Please consider becoming a financial supporter of your North Idaho Centennial Trail so that it will always remain an integral part of your community.
The event we helped out with was the 2nd Annual Ales for the Trail. This was the very first event to be held in the newly renovated McEuen Park in downtown Coeur d’Alene Idaho.
It was a great way to see some familiar faces, feel good about drinking beer, and support the local community. 12 different breweries from around the region featuring 24 different beers, BBQ, sausages, sunshine, and a good time! We served over 350 people and raised close to $10,000 at the event. Can’t wait to help out next year.
If you were going to choose a volunteer vacation where would you go and what would you do?
Here are some links to volunteer vacation sites to help give you some ideas (or better yet…check with your favorite local charity about how you could help them out!):

Is Chivalry Dead?

In reference to the comment: If the two women in question didn’t have an issue with him not holding the door open, then that is their prerogative. Using negative language: rude, lazy, is not going to encourage anyone to be better. Immediately puts people on the defensive.

The reason a lot of women are surprised when doors are held open is that it isn’t a normal occurrence like it once was.

I hold the door open for anyone coming at me or who is behind me, I put the grocery cart in the appropriate holders when finished with them, let a person with less groceries go ahead of me in line, and let older (men/women) and/or pregnant women have my seat when it becomes standing room only. This is what I was taught and also how I have taught my three children to act. But I don’t see manners being emphasized in our society anymore. The question is: Is it our job to chastise people?

Trust me every time I see someone just pushing a shopping cart into the middle of the parking lot instead of the holder 10ft away I would love to shake them and ask “how lazy are you”…do I…No. I can better spend that energy doing something good for someone else that will actually make a difference.
